After thinking about that number, I found myself thinking about what the average reading speed and books per year is. Now, of course, every country is going to have a different statistic, but I am going to stick with the average American 16 and older (maybe we can look at different countries in a later post).
According to Hamilton Nolan on Gawker, the average American over 16 reads about six books a year. WHAT??? Only six books? That's crazy. I'm not going to lie, I have phases where I don't read for a really long time and then suddenly get this craving for books and begin reading like crazy only to quit in the middle of a book. I guess at different points in my life I could say that my average amount of books read was about six per year, but today that just seems outrageous.
David Stevenson states that the average American spends approximately 22.2 hours reading a year. That's kind of sad for us committed readers. To think that the average person only reads 22.2 hours in an entire year is unfathomable! On another subject, Stevenson also states that the average American will spend 243.33 hours on Facebook throughout a year...That's sad too and unfortunately, I have a feeling that my time on Facebook exceeds that. I'm trying to work on that. If I read as much as I'm on Facebook, I can only imagine how many books I could read in a year.
So, with all that said, how many books do you read on average? Let me know by posting on my Facebook page (because we all know I will for sure see it there)!
