Memorial Day Reads! 5 Military Themed Books Everyone Should Read.

Happy Memorial Day! I want to thank all the veterans and soldiers that have or are fighting for our freedom. We would not be where we are today without all of you and I can not thank you enough. Today is the day to remember those who lost their lives for us as well as our lost loved ones. My challenge for those of you who are not soldiers or veterans is to thank at least 5 soldiers/veterans that you know. I suggest doing this whenever you see a soldier/veteran not just today. They deserve it.

To be honest, today’s discussion will be a bit of a stretch for me, but I think it will be great! Being Memorial Day, I thought it would be a good idea to show you a list of 5 great military based books. This is my personal list and I hope to help you readers find some great books with an awesome theme for today.

#5 Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand
Unbroken depicts the story of Lieutenant Louis Zamperini whose Army Air Force bomber crashed into the Pacific ocean and disappeared in May of 1943. The book follows him on his life before the war as well as his survival after the plane crash on the ocean. Laura Hillenbrand definitely captures the strength of a human in all senses.

#4 Black Hawk Down: A Story of Modern War by Mark Bowden
Mark Bowden writes one of the most popular and captivating modern war stories ever written. Black Hawk Down tells the story of about one hundred American soldiers who were dropped in a Somalian town to capture two lieutenants of a Somali warlord. What was originally supposed to last for only an hour, the soldiers ended up fighting for an entire night with 18 casualties and nearly 70 soldiers badly injured. This narrative is definitely worth checking out.

#3 American Sniper: The Autobiography of the Most Lethal Sniper in U.S. Military History by Chris Kyle, Scott McEwen, and Jim DeFelice
This war memoir depicts the deadliest American sniper ever known as “the devil” by his enemies and “the legend” by his Navy SEAL brothers. From 1999 to 2009 Chris Kyle had the most documented kills in United States military history. He was one of the most wanted by the Iraqi soldiers and had rewards for those who killed him. Chris Kyle does a great job at narrating his life story and this memoir is definitely worth the read. Check out the movie based on his life too!

#2 Generation Kill by Evan Wright
The new generation focused on video games and The Real World, were thrown into the war on terrorism within hours of 9/11. This generation was cocky and brave, but were completely unaware of what horrors lay ahead of them. The “First Suicide Battalion” were the leaders of the fight against Saddam. Generation Kill is a funny yet frightening account of the new American war.

#1 The Hunt for Red October by Tom Clancy
This military fiction is based on the chase for a top secret Russian missile sub. Tom Clancy does a fantastic job at keeping the fiction so realistic that the reader can do nothing but keep reading.

Of course there are several other wonderful titles out there and I recommend checking some more out for yourself. Goodreads.com includes these titles as well as several more so that would be a great place to start :)

Do you have anymore military books that are good reads? Leave a description in the comments below and I will definitely check them out!
